Phosphorus-containing flame retardant ramie fiber reinforced poly(lactic acid)(PLA) composites
Biocomposites have received a lot of research attentions because of their many advantages, such as biodegradability and renewable sources. However, the flammability of the biocomposites limited their application. In present work, flame retardant ramie reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA)composites were prepared loaded with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) by twin-screw extruder.APP and DOPO in the composites are proved to be very effective to improve flame retardancy according UL94 test and limit oxygen index (LOI) measurement.Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the improved flame retardancy was due to increasing char residue at high temperature. The effect of APP and DOPO on the mechanical properties was also studied. The loading of APP disturbs the compatibility between PLA and fibers, which can be directly observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
