Synthesis and application of nano-MoS2/bentonite composite for the removal of organic dye

A nano-MoS2/bentonite composite was synthesized by calcinating MoS3 deposited on bentonite in H2.The obtained composite was characterized using thermal analysis,x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. Results show that nano-MoS2 particles were distributed on the surface of bentonite and formed layered structures with layer distances of about 0.64 nm.The composite presented an excellent performance for the removal of methyl orange. Some operation conditions affected the removal of methyl orange such as dosage of composite, initial concentration of methyl orange, temperature, and pH value. However, light source didnt influence the removal efficiency. The removal mechanism was attributed to the adsorption of methyl orange on the nano-MoS2/bentonite composite. The adsorption of methyl orange on the composite was in accord with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The as-prepared nano-MoS2/bentonite is a promising composite for the removal of organic dyes from wastewater.
