Design of a new type flexible stretch-forming machine
Stretch-forming machine (SFM) for sheet metal is a particularly suited to 3-D curved skins and panels where other forming methods will not achieve proper results.SFM is mainly applied to form aircraft skin parts because of its advantages,e.g.small springback of the formed parts.However,the manufacturing cost and the control-system of SFM are high and complex,which lead SFM difficult to apply in other fields widely.A new type SFM was developed by the authors successfully,based on the principle of Pascals theorem,strain-hardening and minimal resistance force.New type SFM is made up of lots of flexible gripping jaw,universal joint,and hydraulic cylinder.Flexible gripping jaws and hydraulic cylinders are located at two sides of carriage (symmetrical distributing).Each of gripping jaws is coupled with three hydraulic cylinders by one universal joint,which is set of horizontal direction,oblique direction,and vertical direction.A row of hydraulic cylinders can be controlled by a common electromagnetic directional valve,which can simplify the control system of the machine significantly.New type SFM have been used for manufacturing 3-D curved sheet metal successfully,such as,the cab of high-speed rail in China and architectural curved sheet metal work-pieces.Compared to the traditional SFM,new type SFM can save the expense of SFM sharply,reduce the complex of control-system,development of efficient materials utilization,and enhance the rate of close-fitting the die.New type SFM will enhance the development in plastic forming apparatus and technology for manufacturing curved sheet metal.
