Challenges faced by Indian Refractory Industry in the Present Decade
Indian economy is at its crossroads with significant growth opportunity for the core sector industries in one hand while problems like land acquisition,high interest regime,tardy progress in second generation reforms marring the prospects of the industry on the other.The fortunes of the Indian refractory industry are intricately linked with the development of the core sector industries like steel and cement.Refractory makers need to gear up to address the increasingly stringent quality norms being imposed by the steel companies,address the changed business model being increasingly followed by the steel makers (Total Refractories Management) and also build a skill pool of technicians to effectively serve the customers.The Indian refractory industry is heterogeneous in nature with large scale companies manufacturing sophisticated products and mostly catering to integrated steel plants while the SME sector manufacturing lower end products and supply tomini steel units.,foundries etc.Hence the dimensions of the challenges faced by them are very different.The present paper looks into some the key challenges being faced by the refractory industry across various segments.
