Effects of SiO2 Impurities on the Synthesis of Hercynites

  Fe2O3,Al2O3 and reduction carbon powder were used as the raw material,and SiO2 micro-powder as additives to synthesize hercynites in N2 atmosphere.The specimens with different SiO2 contents (0,2wt%,5wt% and 8wt%respectively) were fired at different temperature 1400℃,1450℃,1500℃ and 1500℃ for 4 hours.The effects of SiO2 addition on the synthesis and sintering of hercynites were researched by analyzing the sintering performance,phase composition and microstructure of hercynites.The results shows that 2wt% SiO2 can accelerate the synthesis and sintering of the samples.When addition of SiO2 is more than 5wt%,the bulk density of the sample falls rapidly.For more ferrous source react with SiO2 and generate a large quantity of low melting phase,and more aluminum source transform into corundum,which impede the formation of hercynites phase.If bauxite with special grade was used as the raw materials,the bulk density of hercynites was lower and the sintering performance of hercynites was poor because there were more impurities such as SiO2,TiO2 and R2O and so on.The properties of magnesia-bauxite hercynite bricks were worse than magnesia-aluminium hercynite bricks.All the above results indicate that it is inappropriate to use bauxite as the raw materials to synthesize hercynites.
