Influence of Precursor Treatment on Phase Transformation and Morphology of α-Al2O3
With emphasis on investigating the relationship between morphology of milled precursor and the morphology of α-Al2O3,the influence of the commercial Al(OH)3 precursor treatment on phase transformation and morphology of α-Al2O3 has been studied by XRD and SEM.Milling activation of commercial Al(OH)3 precursor led to the acceleration of α-transformation during calcination, and single-phase α-Al2O3 was synthesized from milled precursor at 1150℃.In contrast, the precursor without milling was partially converted into α-Al2O3 at 1150℃,co-existing with transitional phases such as λ-Al2O3,δ-Al2O3 and θ-Al2O3.The morphology and particle size distribution of α-Al2O3 was changed by precursor milling treatment. The α-Al2O3 powders from unmilled AI(OH)3 precursor fired at 1450℃ were typically worm-like and 20~30 μm in size; while the α-Al2O3 powders from milled precursor with the same heat treatment mostly consisted of sphere-like shaped particles in a ≤1 μm size range.
