A New Technique for Improving Quality of Low-grade Magnesite

In Iran the shortage of magnesite with suitable properties for refractory industry has become a major problem. Therefore, attempts to improve the quality of low grade magnesia are very essential.Owing to non-uniform distribution of impurities in magnesite structure,C/S ratio in the ore deposit and hence in the clinker produced is different. It means each particle behaves according to the properties of its constituent phases. Thus, the predominant impure phase cannot be predicted only by mean analysis. In other words, mean analysis is usable while the impurity distribution in the ore body and the formed clinker is fairly uniform. This attitude leads to the definition of a new product called pellet magnesite. In the present study,a number of various low-grade magnesite samples, which are inappropriate for processing due to relatively high CaO or SiO2 content, are blended (to get good C/S) and calcined in a MHF furnace. The produced mixture is powdered and platted before being fed to arotary furnace for sintering. The results indicate that the pellets produced from the low-grade magnesite samples (i.e.MgO=80%),using the proposed simple technique, are comparable to those formed from high-grade magnesites (i.e.MgO=90%).
