Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al2O3-C Refractories Containing Graphene Oxide Nanosheets
Al2O3-C refractories containing graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) were fabricated in present work.Expanded graphite (EG) was mixed and ball milled with micron sized α-Al2O3 to prepare powder mixtures containing different amount of GONs.And then the GONs/α-Al2O3 mixtures were incorporated into Al2O3-C refractories as carbon source to partially replace graphite flake.Al2O3-C refractories with Al,Si and SiO2 additives were fired in a coke bed in the range from 800℃ to 1400℃.The results revealed that GONs in different size and thickness were well distributed in α-Al2O3 powder depending on addition amount of expanded graphite; the GONs produced positive influence on in-situ formed ceramic whiskers in specimens at lower temperature owing to its higher reactivity than that of graphite flake. The specimens containing GONs had better mechanical properties in comparison with specimens containing only graphite flake fired at all the temperatures, which was attributed to the synergetic strengthening and toughening effects of GONs/graphite flake and in-situ formed whiskers.
