Preparedness towards Natural Disasters in Indonesia:Case Study in Padang and Yogyakarta
This study investigates the preparedness towards natural disasters of the two cities in Indonesia.These two cities are located in the disaster-prone areas that frequently had been hit by natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunami.Findings retrieved from in-depth interview (IDI and focus group discussion (FGD)concluded that both cities have prepared enough towards natural disasters.This can be identified through the disaster management policy of local authority,and awareness of the community and businesses towards disaster and its mitigation.In relation with disaster management policy of local authority,it is found that both cities have local government policies which regulate the role of each government institutions,as well as the standards and procedures in the event of disasters.In addition,in terms of infrastructure; both Padang and Sleman had provided vertical and horizontal evacuation paths.Both cities have also been occupied with the early warning system for tsunami,such as sirens,and radios.Furthermore,the study finds that in general,people awareness of the disaster risk largely depend on the characteristics of the community,such as community value cohesion,which built by the community leaders.
