A Case Study of Discrete Element Numerical Simulation for Rock Avalanche Induced by Earthquakes
Hazards of Rock avalanche triggered by earthquakes are a cross-disciplinary subject of engineering geology and earthquake engineering. The rock avalanche of Cuihua Mountain is a marvellous spectacle of seismic avalanche in China.By making use of discrete element method (DEM) and a typical earthquake record (dynamic input),regularity of dynamic response for acceleration was simulated and the failure process was recurred. The following results are obtained.Firstly, the amplification effect of acceleration on the top of slope where the magnification factor is equal to 2.0 is caused by earthquake inertia force.Secondly, the rock avalanche has some features of high speed and long run-out.Thirdly,the failure process of rock avalanche includes four stages which are starting up stage, accelerating stage, decelerating stage and accumulating stage respectively.
