Effect of Hydroxyl Radical Scavenger on Methyl Orange Discoloration Induced by Contact Glow Discharge Electrolysis
Methyl orange (MO) discoloration induced by contact glow discharge electrolysis in a phosphate solution was investigated.Influences of hydroxyl radical scavenger (tert-butanol) addition on the discoloration were examined.Experimental results revealed that the absorbance at 465nm and that at 270nm gradually decreased while the absorption band at 207nm gradually increased during the treatment. The discoloration at 465nm was slightly retarded with little amount of tert-butanol addition and enhanced with large amount of tert-butanol addition. The discoloration at 270nm was almost inhibited when the concentration of tert-butanol was over 1.0g/L.It was shown that hydrogen atoms would be the most likely active species for the azo-bond destruction and the hydroxyl radicals be the ones for the reaction of the aromatic rings of MO during the discharge treatment.
