Preparation and Characterization of Activated Carbons from Biomass-based Carbon through Phosphoric Acid Activation

Activated carbon was prepared from pyrolysis charcoal of biomass through phosphoric acid activation. The effects of process variables such as the ratio of impregnation (r),activation temperature (T) and time (t) on the adsorption capacity of activated carbon were studied.Methylene blue decolorization (q) was investigated in this paper. In addition, the structure of the resultant activated carbon was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microcopy (SEM).The results indicate that the suitable technological conditions are as follows:r=2∶l,T=450 C,t=2h,q=70rnL/g.The activation process changed functional groups, changed the number of pore structure and achieved the high adsorption capacity.
