Dielectric Properties and Photocatalytic Activity of Single Phase BFO Prepared by Chemical Coprecipitation

Bismuth ferrite (BFO) is one of very few multiferroics with a simultaneous coexistence of ferroelectric and antierromagnetic at room temperature and has attracted much attention due to its potential applications in memory devices, sensors and spintronics devices. In this work,30~90 nm BFO powders with single rhombohedral phase were prepared by chemical coprecipitation method followed by calcining post-treatment at 500 ℃.Photocatalytic properties of the powders and dielectric properties of BFO ceramic were characterized,respectively.Cut-off wavelength of the powders was 590 nm,which demonstrated that the powders should have efficient ultraviolet photocatalytic activity.During 3 hr UV irradiation,0.3g BFO powders can decolorize 10 ppm RhB aqueous solution (10 ml),and RhB decomposition rate reached up to 95%.After BFO ceramic was sintered at 800 ℃ in air,its dielectric constant and loss were about 250 and 0.03 at room temperature in the frequency range from 102 to 104 Hz and the dielectric constant and loss as a function of temperature were obtained under different frequencies. Finally, the ceramic hysteresis loop was measured.
