Microbially Induced Sedimentary Structures in the Mesoproterozoic Ruyang Group from Lushan Area,Southern Henan Province--A New Window through Early Life

Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS),including sand cracks, sand chips, mat chips and mat wrinkles, widely exist in the Mesoproterozoic Ruyang Group,Lushan area,Henan Province. Those structures can be further defined as mat destruction structures.Meanwhile, sand cracks can be divided into six categories according to shape difference:spindle-shaped,radial,dendritic,Leaf-vein-shaped,and polygonal reticulate shape patterns.Sedimentary environment, from the upper subtidal zone to intertidal zone, especially the transitional zone between foreshore sandstone and backshore mudstone,is favorable for MISS,which implies a comparatively stable stage for Xionger aulacogen in the Mesoproterozoic. This study reveals that the diversity of sand cracks is determined by sedimentary environment (substrate and subaerial exposure) and microbial process (the thickness of microbial mat).MISS from the Ruyang Group shows a picture of very active microbial population in the Mesoproterozoic ocean, who must have played an important role in oxidizing environment at that time.
