Performance of Integrated Household Constructed Wetland for Rural Domestic Wastewater Treatment
Due to the likely strengthening of environmental legislation in recent years, the issues of drinking water security and wastewater treatment in rural areas have increasingly become an concern for both the researchers and the government officials.On-site purification systems are good options to reduce the high cost of sewage disposal in China rural areas. An integrated household constructed wetland system (IHCWS) was developed to treat the wastewater in rural villages in north China. The system comprises two-stage sedimentation tanks with capacities of 0.6 and 0.4 m3,respectively,and a vertical flow constructed sand bed with a section area of 1.2 m2 and a depth of 1.0 m.It had a significant effect on the thermal insulation with a 0.5 m sawdust layer covering the system to make the temperature in constructed sand bed keep above 6 ℃,even in the lowest climate temperature-15 ℃.The average removal efficiency for COD,BOD5,TSS,turbidity,NH3-N,TN,TP were 93.0%,96.0%,97.0%,89.6%,88.4%,75.4% and 87.7%,respectively.The system with no energy input in operation has performed well for 10 months without hydraulic failure and clogging. The result indicates that the household integrated constructed wetland system is feasible for wastewater purification in the rural areas of north China.
