The Effect of HRT and C/Ns on the Nitrate Removal Using an Intensified Biofilm-electrode Reactor

An intensified biofilm-electrode reactor was developed for treatment of nitrate contaminated groundwater.Continual flow cultural method was adopted in this experiment.Nitrate removal efficiency, nitrite accumulation and pH in the treated water were mainly investigated at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) levels and C/Ns when DO and applied currents were steady.Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions could be made:when the influent NO3--N concentration was 50 mg · L-1,C∶ N =2.5∶1,HRT =8 h,the effluent average concentration of NO3--N was 0.06 mg · L-1,nitrite and NH3-N were not detected. When HRT =8 h and C∶N =1∶1,the effluent average concentration of NO3--N was 0.O1 mg · L-1,NO2--N was lower than 0.02 mg · L-1.But when C∶N =0.75∶1,the effluent average concentration of NO3--N was about 2.93 mg · L-1,the NO3--N removal efficiency was 94.3%.
