Situation of Cascade Hydropower Development and its Impact to Ecosystem and Environment in the Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River
The upper reaches of the Yangtze River is the most important water resource in China and is rich in hydropower potential.A number of large hydropower stations are to be constructed in the near future to meet the increasing demand of energy. This paper analyzes potential water power resources and presents the current situation of the cascade hydropower development in the main stream and tributary of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The upper reaches of the Minjiang is taken as one case; the hydropower stations development in the main stream of Minjiang and its tributary is analyzed. The potential impacts of the construction project on the environment and ecology in the upper Minjiang River are briefly discussed and suggestions to mitigate the negative impacts are proposed.
