A Mode Switching Algorithm Based on Energy Efficiency in LTE

  The power consumption of wireless access network will become an important issue in the coming years.Multiple Input Multiple Outputs (MIMO) in Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the technologies utilized to save base station energy.Different MIMO transmission modes have different power saving effects.In this paper,a base station power consumption model and energy efficiency (EE) metric to evaluate the possible benefit of using MIMO are presented and discussed,then we propose a dual thresholds mechanism to switch between two MIMO transmission modes (transmit diversity and spatial multiplexing) to further improve EE.Two switching criteria (CQI and CQI&NACK) are used to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed dual thresholds algorithm.We provide simulation data to show that such an algorithm can improve the EE by 5-34%compared with traditional single threshold method.
