Optimisation of thin intrinsic amorphous silicon buffer layers for use in heterojunction silicon wafer solar cells
Heterojunction silicon wafer solar cells incorporating thin intrinsic hydro-genated amorphous silicon a-Si:H(i) buffer layers for surface passivation have a very high efficiency potential. The optimisation of these a-Si:H(i) buffer layers is of utmost importance for realising this PV efficiency potential. In this contribution we show that for deposition conditions close to the onset of the amorphous-to-microcrystalline transition, only a very small process pressure range provides high surface passivation quality. There is thus a need to carefully control the deposition parameters in order to obtain a high passivation quality, especially when working close to the onset of the amorphous-to-microcrystalline silicon transition.
