Plasma synthesis of silicon nanocrystals and application to organic/inorganic hybrid photovoltaics

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have unique optical and electronic properties that are advantageous for device applications. Here we have explored its potential application to photovoltaics.Solution processable, freestanding silicon nanocrystals were synthesized firstly by VHF non-thermal plasma reactor using silicon tetrachloride as a silicon precursor. And then it was successfully employed as the electron acceptor in SiNCs/P3HT hybrid solar cells.SiNCs incorporation in P3HT introduces a large SiNCs/P3HT interface, which facilitates the exciton separation through the interface. However, recombination centers in SiNCs may have a negative effect on device performance. In order to eliminate recombination centers,SiNCs annealing was conducted in N2 atmosphere with 3% H2.Device performance is enhanced dramatically after annealing at 400℃ for 2 hours. This method provides us a route to further enhance the SiNCs/P3HT hybrid solar cell efficiency.
