Effects of Stamps Properties and Printing Pressure on Microcontact Printing Process

Microcontact printing (μCP) is a high efficiency and low-cost technology for surface patterning in micro/nano scale. This paper investigates the effects of stamps mechanical properties and printing pressures on the quality of the fabricated microstructures during the μCP process. To study the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based stamps, five weight ratios of PDMS specimens were tested and the relationship between the stress and stain was developed.Three line-patterns stamps at different weight ratios were casted when the printing pressures applied in the range of 1 KPa to 1 MPa.Experimentally results demonstrate that the optimal pressure is in the range of 20 KPa to 200 KPa.Lower pressure causes larger defects due to the confined space for patterning, while the larger pressure leads to the deformation of stamps. The results also show that the stamp of 20:1 weight ratio can obtain the highest quality of the printed patterns under medium level pressure due to its lowest Young’s modulus. The hard stamp can be effective to resist some deformations during printing.
