Analysis of the Mechanical Properties of BNNTs in Compression
For the purpose of studying the way of using boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in nano-measurement technology,we use the method of Dreiding and Universal force fields to simulate the axial compression of two single wall boron nitride (BN) nanotubes: (12,0) zigzag BNNT and (12,12) armchair BNNT.Based on the simulation data, the mechanical properties of the compressed BNNTs have been collected and analyzed.Studies have shown that: 1) The Youngs modulus and the compressive strength of (12,0) BN nanotube are both greater than the other ones; 2) Different curves of the strain energy accumulation are shown after deformation. In the event of topological deformation, energy of the former declines much faster than of the latter; 3) (12,12) BN nanotube has a secondary deformation when its continuously compressed and the forms of the two buckling deformations are distinctly different. And all of these differences depend on their topological structures.
