Investigation of Durability of the Infrared Transparent Glasses

The durability of the GeSe4 and As2S3 glass compositions has been studied over time under various temperatures. The evolution of the surface topography by atomic force microscopy and the optical transmission in the infrared window, have been measured as a function of the time spent in the corrosive solution. It was found that an important degradation of the optical transmission was observed in the whole transparency window at 90 °C.Moreover, the experimental results show that high temperature value enhances the corrosion reaction, the activation energy of the corrosion reaction of the GeSe4 and As2S3 glass in de-ionized water was determined, and a reaction mechanism was proposed.Furthermore, pure selenium nanostructures were formed during the corrosion process of the GeSe4 glass, and the nature of these nanostructures – amorphous or crystallized -depends on temperature.
