Acoustic Emission Burst-type Signal Detection Using Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Based Optic Fiber Sensor
Optical fiber sensors are rapidly emerging as viable alternatives to piezoelectric devices as effective substitution of detecting acoustic emission (AE) owing to potential advantages over conventional tuned piezoelectric transducers. The authors have investigated Mach-Zehnder interferometer based AE sensors for acoustic emission detecting, with the hope of replacing the existing conventional piezoelectric transducer in storage tank floor evaluation.Sensitivity and performance of Mach-Zehnder AE sensor have been evaluated compared with existing transducer.Further,Hsu-Nielsen pencil lead break test was conducted to explore details of Mach-Zehnder AE sensors in acoustic emission burst signal monitoring. The results indicate that optical fiber AE sensors based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer can be used as transducers sensitive to acoustic events and the indication of imminent failure of a structure.Optical fiber sensors are useful in many applications where conventional piezoelectric transducers are not well suited. In addition, some suggestions are put forward for forthcoming actual application on the spot.
