Experimental Investigation of the Dynamic Characteristics of a Dualrotary- spindle Milling Head
The dynamic characteristics of a dual-rotaryspindle milling head are investigated based on the experimental modal analysis.Firstly, modal test is performed on the milling head by using the single-input multiple-output approach, and the frequency response functions (FRF) are acquired.Modal parameters of the structure such as natural frequency, damping ratio and mode shapes are identified.Next, the cutting performance of the milling head is tested. The tool tip FRFs of two cylindrical helix cutters are measured, and the chatter stability are predicted based on the regenerative chatter theory.By combining the visualized mode shape and stability charts, future improvements of the structural design and proper cutting parameters can be proposed.
