Characteristics of Clustering Debris Flows in Wenchuan Earthquake Zone

Clustering debris flows, namely a large number of debris flows simultaneously triggered by widespread rainstorm, occurred in four regions of Wenchuan earthquake stricken areas in 2009 and 2010.The characteristics of the flows are examined with regard to occurring time, rainfall threshold, ground motion, spatial distribution, debris supply, formation, and damage.Firstly, the clustering flows were triggered by long duration and intensive rainfall, and their occurring time had an hour delay after the occurrence of rainstorm centers.Secondly, two parameters corresponding to seismic ground motion in four regions showed similarities.PGA of these regions were 0.2 g; response spectra of Qingping and Yingxiu were 0.35 s and the others were 0.4 s; Thirdly, majorities of debris flows distributed along strike of seismic fault,on upper plate and along river system. Finally, four formation types consisting of tributarydominated,dam-breaking,mainstream-dominated and mobilization from landslide or slope debris may co-exist with a main form.
