Investigation on the micro bending of metallic crystal by the non-local crystal plasticity finite element method

A higher order dislocation density based crystal plasticity finite element method is adopted to investigate the deformation behaviours of metallic crystal during the process of micro bending, both statistically stored dislocations (SSDs) and geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) in each slip system are taken as the internal state variables. The combined effects of the microstructure heterogeneous, such as the orientation distribution of grains and dislocation density distribution, are described by means of the non-local model. Two models with different number of grains across the thickness are simulated, with the aim to investigate the evolutions and distributions of SSDs and GNDs,as well as the aggregation of GNDs in the neighbourhood of grain boundary. The calculated dislocation density distribution is compared with the micro hardness distribution obtained from the micro bending experiments.According to the results from the simulations and experiments, the strengthening effect of SSDs and GNDs during the micro bending are discussed,it is confirmed that the present physically based model gives an insight into the deformation mechanism and dislocation density evolution in the micro bending process.
