FE Simulation and Experiment Study on Isothermal Micro-forging Process of Micro-turbine

Micro turbines are important components applied widely in the area of micro power devices and micro flyers.Micro-manufacturing technology is critical to these micro parts. In this paper,an isothermal forging process was proposed to manufacture the micro turbine. The micro-forming devise and two geometrical specimens (wafer-specimen and ring-specimen) were designed according the geometry of the micro part. The pre-designed scheme was analyzed by finite element (FE) simulation, and effect of specimen geometry on forming process, plastic flow and filling were investigated. The simulation results indicated that the scheme of using ring-specimen can improve the metal filling and reduce forming force through divided flow effectively.Based on the simulation, experiments of isothermal forging process were carried out,and a good agreement was achieved between experiments and simulations. Also,a good quality of micro turbine was manufactured. The research indicates that the isothermal forging process is an appropriate technology for manufacturing micro turbine, and also can be applied for manufacturing similar parts.
