Online Courses in Medical Technology Application,Support and Management Improve Effectiveness and Patient Safety
Education and training of clinical and technical staff interacting with medical technology enhances the effectiveness and safety of medical care.Effective methods for training include simulations and computer-based training.Online training via the Internet allows 24×7 accesses to training resources in an asynchronous fashion.Through a grant from the Pan American Health & Education Foundation,online courses were developed for clinical and technical staff.The courses provide background on healthcare,medical and technical topics and focused sections on technologies.Each section covers Principles,Application,Patient Safety,Common Problems and Solutions,Maintenance and Technology Management.Extensive use of web resources and simulations enhance the courses.The initial English version has been taught in the USA since 2007.The courses were translated to Spanish and adapted for use in Latin America for use in 2008.Students have included BMETs,nurses,engineering students,clinical technologists from the USA,Latin American,Caribbean and other nations worldwide.From the initial Patient Care Equipment and Advanced Medical Technology courses,an online Healthcare Technology Planning and Management,and a roving hands-on laboratory course have been developed to create a 12-credit Biomedical Equipment Technology Sequence to train students to be biomedical equipment technicians.From this endeavor,additional online,multi-media courses have been developed such as those focusing on the number one hazard with medical technology (ECRI Institute 2012) – Clinical Alarms.These academic and workplace improvement courses are available in interactive,instructor facilitated university course level versions and automated courses designed for staff training and competency assessment.The automated courses are integrated into a unique orientation program with mentorship,laboratory training,and assessment via testing and practical evaluation.
