A Multi-frequency EIT System for irreversible Electroporation Feedback

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a functional real-time imaging technique, used mainly in medical applications.EIT is based on impedance measurements and its spatial reconstruction within an object under test. For the measurements small well known alternating currents (AC) are injected via electrodes into the object under test. The resulting voltages at the boundary are measured and used in combination with the known current values for the subsequent reconstruction of the spatial impedance distribution.EIT is a lowcost technique, which works without ionic radiation,is painless and has no known hazards.Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) is a permanent permeability change of the cell plasma membrane due to an applied electric field. This effect is used for ablations during operations. This paper presents a novel EIT system designed for measurement, visualization and feedback of IRE within living tissue. The developed system prototype uses two electrode plates placed around the target tissue for data acquisition. The system enables impedance spectroscopic multi-frequency excitations and measurements in real-time.The developed system is modular arranged and based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) System on Chip (SoC) that is connected to host PC.The embedded system is in charge for data acquisition,pre-processing and transmission, whereby the host PC provides further filtering and data conditioning and the subsequent image reconstruction and display.
