Improving image accuracy of region of interest in cone-beam CT using prior image

When a patient has to be repeatedly CT-scanned,the risk of overdose increases.Region of interest (ROI) imaging method is one of the reasonable approaches to decreasing integral dose to patients. However, reconstructed images may have severe artifacts because of lack of data outside the ROI.In this paper,we propose a method for decreasing image artifacts via using prior image of a patient outside the ROI.The XCAT Phantom was used for a numerical study. We assumed the patient lost about half of liver and stomach from treatments. We acquired nontruncated data of the patient before treatment, and also acquired truncated data of the ROI after treatment. Then,we reconstructed 3D image of the ROI using the data outside the ROI from the prior image projection data.We improved accuracy of the ROI image through the proposed method, and believe the proposed method can find practically useful for repeated CT scans of ROI.
