Studies of the Integration of Education/Training of Medical Physicists with that of Radiological Technologists
In Japan,there are 23 universities that offer an undergraduate,MSc and/or PhD education for radiology technologists.18 of these universities have a Medical Physics course accredited by the Japanese Board for Medical Physicist Qualification.We have to ensure that we can provide an accredited environment for candidates in both professions to attain certification with limited resources and time.The curriculum,credit points and education/training time needed for trainees and trainers/supervisors in Osaka University were experimentally reorganized and revised by author according to competencies described in the training books of IAEA/RCA RAS6038 TCS38 (Physics of Radiation Oncology),TCS48 (Radiological Diagnosis) and TCS50 (Nuclear Medicine).Revision of basic natural sciences such as mathematics,physics and information sciences was also incorporated for radiological technologist.It was found that education/training in the physics of radiation oncology could not be achieved in a two-year master’s course.Also,radiological diagnosis and nuclear medicine could not be accommodated and the time for research work for a master’s thesis would need to be cut.At least a half of another three years of a PhD course would be needed to include all three fields of medical physics.A master’s course and at least half of a PhD course would be required to properly train and educate a medical physicist to certification level.An education and training program that integrates both degrees is required for medical physicists and radiological technologists.Effective sharing of resources would be needed.
