Status of Medical Physics Education in Nepal
Nepal’s history of radiological service dates back to 1923.In 1991,Bir Hospital,Kathmandu introduced the first Radiotherapy unit with a Tele Cobalt machine.Along with it started the Medical Physics service, with one medical physicist assigned for the tele-cobalt machine.Mind boggling developments have taken place in the field of diagnostic radiology and Radiotherapy since then.Newer modalities are being introduced in major hospitals and latest radiological equipment are being imported; at the same time small X-ray set-ups are being established on a day-by-day basis. This quantitative increment may have a positive impact on the health service system of the country; but the lack of control and lack of qualified medical physicist is a serious problem.Concomittant methods must be devised to improve the existing situation of medical physics education for purposes of necessary qualification: Strengthening academic program for Medical Physicist, training the trainer and on the job training,by providing better facilities designed to stop brain drain and to stay in the profession longer, recognising the role and responsibilities of the Medical Physicist,by establishing Medical Physicist certification board and by following the internation guidelines and standards. The need for qualified medical physicist is a recognized worldwide problem but it is more acute in Nepal.Challenges and issues of medical physics have no national boundary. Thus a collaborative effort is required to promote this field. The need for Medical Physicist education system and certification board is a must for Nepal. So are the rules, guidelines and standard that need to be succinctly formulated.
