International Medical Physics Certification:But what else is needed for International acceptance?

Introduction: There is a current global shortage of certified medical physicists (CMP).However, recent EFOMP,IAEA and IOMP publications have provided some future direction by establishing international guidelines for an education and clinical training program. The IOMP recommends that a CMP should have completed a final, overall examination.IOMP also approved the formation of the International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB) and is planning progression towards ‘International Certification’.A 2008 EFOMP review reported that education, training, supervision, and certification varied in European countries due to a wide range of reasons.Consequently, international certification should (i) ensure that a basic minimum standard is achieved and (ii) certification is graded to classify the quality and standard achieved by the Certifying Body in each country. The extent of the health care facilities, government support and an adequate CMP workforce to provide the education, training and final certification examinations, can affect the certification standard. Each certification body program should be audited, assessed and graded for IMPCB registration. Methods: The IOMP and IAEA should seek a cooperatively funded assignment.IOMP should establish an Audit and Certification Panel (ACP) with experienced examiners appointed to work under the auspices of the IMPCB.ACP examiners should be internationally recognized experts selected from a broad range of countries with leading medical physics expertise. The IMPCB should develop certification grades for ACP assessment of the program arranged by a medical physics Certification Body.Grading would range from level ‘A+’ for unconditional certification to work in any country to ‘C-‘ for no certification and no formal training.Discussion: The IMPCB assessment would be voluntary but would assist all countries in determining certification equivalence of overseas CMP from elsewhere.Apart from providing an incentive to improve from this scheme,ACP audits would identify countries that require further assistance in their training/certification program.
