The relevance of different brain regions in bilingual study

Object: To observe different activated brain areas when English major graduate do the Chinese-English vocabulary discriminant semantic experiment, using independent component analysis (ICA).Also the lateralization of the brain will be discussed.Method: the signal is magnified 500 times by SynAmps amplifier, then EOG is removed by the inside software offline, followed by digital filter (band pass 0.5 to 90Hz).After that the signal is epoched by EEGLAB(EEGLAB is an interactive MATLAB Toolbox),ICA is used when analyze the remaining signals. Results: Chinese cognitive task activate regions such as bilateral frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe; while English cognitive task mainly activate brain regions: bilateral frontal lobe, left parietal lobe. What’s more, in the bilingual cognitive stage, θ wave (4 ~ 7Hz)and α-wave (8 ~ 12Hz) are both active. Conclusion: the brain language area is mainly in the left frontal lobe.English learning shows left hemisphere advantage, while it shows two hemispheres of the balance of power in the Chinese learning.

Bilingual learning cognitive independent component analysis lateralization EEGLAB.
