Technology to Assist Ageing Australians: Opportunities and Barriers

USA is further ahead in the uptake of technology to assist the elderly than Australia, particularly technology for caregivers of the elderly. Australia needs better market information, better organizational information technology capability with a mandate and business case for adoption of technology, better communications across the industry on solutions, ideally with one clear voice and information channel for the industry, better leadership of health and workforce reform, and technology adoption that is ‘hand in glove’ with workforce reform. The reality facing the sector is that the projected costs to government are significant, the demand for aged care is increasing and maintaining the status quo is not sustainable. Productivity improvement supported by workforce reform and appropriate use of technology is a necessity. This paper provides a categorization of technology to assist the elderly and identifies issues affecting this include leadership and information flows throughout the sector.
