From structure integrity to system integrity resilience

Integrity with humans and data implies inconsistence in their behavior. In the human, a persons integrity is considered as a great trait of that person. In the database, the well-known instance of data integrity may refer to two integrity rules in relational database, namely Rule I: never having an instance without primary key, and Rule II: foreign key reference between two tables. Integrity is an attribute at behavioral level in the functionbehavior-structure theory of the author. The importance of integrity of something X is such that the Xs integrity gives a cue to failures of X. Structure integrity is an area that has received wide intention in the field of safety (science, technology, and engineering). In the past, structure integrity mostly refers to cracks governed by elevated temperature and pressure on the structure. Control of structure integrity is passive in the sense that the structures structure does not involve in overcoming cracks. In this paper, the author proposes a new concept called active control of structure integrity, which means that the structures structure is reconfigured to remedy deficiencies in structure integrity. The structures structure implies that a structure should be viewed as a system. Consequently, structure integrity becomes system integrity. The notion of system integrity has a benefit that not only the crack behavior is concerned but other system behaviors, e.g., motion behaviors, optical behaviors, can be readily included in the scope of system integrity. Another important benefit arising from the notion of system integrity is that recovery of a system inferior integrity by means of the reconfiguration of the system makes sense, which is similar to the concept of resilience. Thus, a new paradigm of design and operation management for structure or structure system merges, which may be called system integrity resilience (SIR). In this paper, the fundamental problems related to science, technology and engineering of SIR are presented. The future research direction that is motivated by solving these problems is outlined, including potential research methodologies and technologies.
