Structural analysis on reinforcement for thick wall nozzle of pressure vessels

Pressure vessels are widely used in process industry which their typical structure is cylinder shell. The structural calculation and design on nozzle reinforcing of a cylinder shell are indispensable in engineering. Nozzles on cylinder shell not only weaken the whole strength of the pressure vessel, but also cause a significant stress concentration. On which it can probablly result in fatigue failure. The calculation indicates that local high stress occurs near the contact point of nozzle and the cylinder shell. So it is necessary to do some research on the shell with nozzle reinforcing. In this paper, the stress distribution near the weakness part of pressure vessel cylinder shell with nozzles is obtained by using finite element analysis. The maximum equivalent stress occurs near the contact point of nozzle and the cylinder shell, and it can be referred in fatigue strength assessment. The comparison and analysis of the distribution of equivalent stress with the nozzle reinforcing methods between flush nozzle reinforcing and inwardly protruding nozzle reinforcing are done. The mechanical structural strength is evaluated by selecting the maximum stress path and doing stress linearization processing. The results show that thick wall nozzle reinforcing can satisfy the requirement of design strength. It can clearly work out that inwardly protruding nozzle reinforcing is obviously superior to flush nozzle reinforcing.
