The stress distribution and critical crack length analysis of a cracked multilayer urea reactor

Lots of stress corrosion cracking cracks was found in multilayer urea reactors after they were dissected. Based on the dissection results, a physical model of multilayer urea reactors with cracked layers is built and a computation method is proposed to calculate the layer stress distribution and the critical crack length in the cracked multilayer vessels. Detail calculation process is presented in the paper. From this paper, it is proved that the inner layer stress is much larger than the outer ones when there are gaps between layers and the layers are uncracked; the critical crack length in acracked layer becomes larger with the increase of the layer number from inner to outer without considering the effect of cracks in the other layers; in contrast, the critical crack length in the layer becomes shorter than that in the inner ones and the stresses of the uncracked layers become larger when considering this effect. At last, reasonable proposals are suggested to ensure the safety operation of multilayer urea reactors.
