Evaluation of creep properties by three-point bending tests with small specimens

For residual life prediction of high temperature components in service, the use of conventional creep tests are restricted due to the difficulty of bulk material removal. Therefore, small specimen test methods are developed. Three point bending (TPB) creep tests with small specimens, being more stable and easier to perform, are studied in this paper. Based on a simple Norton creep law, the analytical solution for the load-line displacement of the small specimen is established by the complementary strain energy approach. Then the creep parameters are directly obtained by using these equations. In order to verify this approach, tests on Cr-Mo steel specimens are performed on a custom-designed system at temperature 813K. The results show that the derived creep parameters from the bending data are in reasonable agreement with those obtained from conventional creep tests. The stress relaxation data can be easily obtained from these bending tests.
