Investigation on corrosion under insulation (CUI) of 304 stainless steel welded joints
Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is a hidden behavior occurring at metal exterior surface under insulation. In this study, a laboratory simulated device of CUI was established to observe the corrosion behavior of 304 stainless steel welded joints under insulation. Welded and sensitized specimens were tested in different corrosive solution for 168h at 120鈩? CUI performance of 304 stainless steel welded joints was then analyzed both by macro- and micro- scales. The results showed that serious corrosion appeared in weld region rather than base metal. In lower concentration NaCl solution, the specimen was more susceptive to CUI than in higher concentration. Compared to welded specimens, the CUI of sensitized specimens was relatively moderate which was correlated to disappearance of poor chromium area in grain boundary through heat treatment.
