Western Performance Managements Adaptation within Chinese Organizational Culture
From an industrial and organizational behavior point of view, the current paper examined Western performance management methodologies adaptation issues within Chinese organizational culture. Following a summary of western performance managements three notable inadaptability issues, a qualitative analysis of the issues cultural roots was conducted and three feasible solutions were proposed. Specifically, the analysis focused on difficulty faced by Chinese employees in understanding quantitative and precise appraisal methods, biased subordinate feedback in the application of 360 degrees feedback method, and conflict between providing objective performance appraisal and maintaining positive social relations in workplace. The paper concluded on a call for an accumulation of domestic research knowledge on Chinese organizational behaviors and an envisioned future of global cultural integration in human resource practices.
