Big Science or Little Science?—A Case Study of Basic Research in Universities

摘要：

Currently people pay more attention to the evaluation and research on Big Science and focus on its development trend. However, it is pointed out that Little Science is the most suitable and innovative science system that can produce original innovation. Little Science is believed to be good science in terms of institutional organization, personnel training, technical invention, and research paper. University-based research in China was studied as an example. It was proposed that Little Science, representing small scale study, should receive more attention. Several measures were also suggested to optimize the system of Little Science, such as the establishment of scientific evaluation system, optimal allocation of research funding, Formation of a wide range of investment system and strengthen the dominant position of basic research in university.
