On the Changes of Chinese Government Role in the Mutual Interaction between Market and Society Since 1978
With Carl Polanyis theory on the mutual interaction between market and society, this paper aims to analyze how Chinese governments role has changed under the influence of market and social forces since the reform and opening up in 1978. Such conclusions are drawn: since 1978, in the mutual interaction between market and society, Chinese government role, on the basis of the government of almighty political domination, has been experiencing developmentoriented government with emphasis on economic construction and is changing to the service-oriented government with emphasis on social construction. The changes of government role show that the market and society are two wings of the countrys development; good governance of government is to keep a balance between market and social development. To build a better society, a relatively stable triangle balance must be formed among market, society, and the government.
