What Impedes Southeast Students to Make Friends with the Chinese? —On the Investigation in 15 Universities, Guangdong Province and Guangxi Province

Generally, studying abroad can not only enrich knowledge and broaden horizons, but also build up transnational social networks, which are different from the domestics, and breed the new hope of the social capital. After doing survey and interview on students from 15 different universities in Guangdong and Guangxi, we concluded that the Southeast-Asian students have built up different transnational social networks to varying degrees in China; however, these networks are small and still in the initial phase. The reason of this issue can be listed as follows. To begin with, the segregation between foreign students and Chinese students in the campuses has been an artificial barrier for cross-national communication. Besides, students from different countries arent willing to make friend with each other because of different values and habits. In addition, students from Southeast-Asian countries prefer to participate in the activities hold by their own organizations, especially the activities hold by embassies of their countries, which will increase the cohesion of students from the same nation. Finally, the development of the internet and the nowadays rapid and convenient correspondence play a significant role for the abroad students to keep in touch with their parents and their motherland, which restrain their hope and step to build up the new social networks objectively. In order to solve these problems, we should break the artificial barriers, making the southeast students become fully integrated into the Chinese local community, and improve the bilateral relations.
