The study of nitriding rate in mold steel by nitrogen species under novel ntriding pocess
Especially, since energy saving and weight reduction of vehicles, plasma nitriding process is recommended for the alternately carburizing process which is most interested problem for the high performance and cost down in surface modification. The greater parts of researchers are keen on developing of new process for high hardness on the steel without compound layer in the plasma nitriding procedure. However, generally plasma nitriding process has a remaining compound layer on the steel surface. Although the diffusion of nitrogen atom inward steel is occurred at the final step, from surface to bulk inside through the nitrogen atom concentration gradient, in the vacuum chamber energy transition of gas molecule of nitrogen is activated by many different steps depending on the plasma conditions. And this study made comparative on nitrogen sources transfer with conventional DC plasma nitriding and novel plasma nitriding (ATONA) process using plasma diagnosis and metallurgical observation, like optical microscopy and SEM, with different vacuum pressure and gas ratio by ATONA process. And it showed a different behavior of DC plasma nitriding including the nano-sized nitride on the outer surface of steel due to nitrogen source of determining plasma species.
