Investigation on oxidation of quenching oil

The oxidation mechanism is summarized firstly in this paper, i,e, radical initiation, chain propagation, branching and termination, and based on that an aging criteria of quenching oil is suggested, TAN reaches 1.0-1.5mgKOH/g, which can be measured by either titration or FTIR scan quantization. The analysis to changes of cooling characteristics of oxidized quenching oil is further conducted as shorter film stage and bigger maximum cooling speed or cooling curve moving to upper right are observed, however, its hardening power actually decreases. On how to prevent or slow down the oxidation process, from product aspect, using hydrogenated base oil and combination of anti-oxidant additives are strong recommended, while from application aspects, a set of measures are suggested too.
