Influence of yttrium addition on mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of CrN coatings
Cr1-xYxN coatings were fabricated by reactive co-sputtering deposition and the yttrium content was changed by varying the yttrium target power. The effect of varying amounts of yttrium addition on the structure, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of CrN coatings has been studied. The results reveal that yttrium atoms substitute chromium atoms in Cr-N lattice forming the solid solution Cr1-xYxN coatings. Scratch tests show that yttrium doping has a beneficial effect on the adhesion of the coatings. After 2 h, 850℃ oxidation process in air, the Cr0.988Y0.012N coating shows the best oxidation resistance, while over-doping of yttrium produces detrimental effects on oxidation resistance of the coatings.
