Metal forming simulation technology for removing process design failures
In this paper, basic concepts and requirements of intelligent metal forming simulation are introduced. A general-purpose metal forming simulator AFDEX developed to meet the requirements is then introduced and discussed, with emphasis on its intelligence. The simulator is based on an adaptive and optimal meshgeneration technique and includes many intelligent, application-oriented special functions, which not only enhance solution accuracy but also minimize user intervention during a metal forming simulation. Characteristics and typical applications of the simulator are described with several application examples of fracture predictions in tensile test, forging, extrusion, drawing, swaging, thread rolling, roll piercing and ring rolling. Design failures due to die fracture and economical gains owing to optimization of process design and die design are also introduced.
