Environmentally-friendly lubrication for cold forging in Japan

Conventionally, the soap-phosphate coating has been widely used in cold forging. This lubrication coating has the high tribological performances to prevent galling and to reduce friction; however it produces a large amount chemical sludge and it demands a long series of lubrication process, so it yields the large treating space, the expensive equipment, and the heavy environmental pollution. Recently, the environmental issues have become a serious status in metal forming. Thus, almost the same high performances as the soap-phosphate coating are required for the environmentally-friendly lubricant in cold forging. Meanwhile, environmentally-friendly lubricant oils like chloride-free oil have been also energetically developed. Several lubricants have demonstrated high performance almost sufficiently under not so severe tribological conditions. In partial lines of cold forging, these lubricants have been alternatively used in Japan. The lubricants as well as hard coating assist the tool in reduction of tribological load effectively. The trend of the development of the lubricant in Japan is reviewed; moreover the levels of their performance are reported.
